Why is tax not being added to orders?

Tax is calculated on a product-by-product basis. In order for tax to be applied to a product in a user's cart, the following conditions must be met:

  • The product's "Tax Exempt" setting must be set to "No" (Shop > Products).
  • You must establish tax classes (Shop > Tax Classes).
  • The user purchasing the product must be within the the correct geographical area associated with a tax class.
  • The product a user is purchasing must be the correct type to match a tax class's settings (example: physical or digital).
  • Your shop settings must be set to tax the correct types of products (Shop > Options > Taxable Items).

Possible reasons why tax wouldn't be calculated include:

  • Your tax classes are set up to only charge physical or digital products, but the product in the user's cart is the opposite type.
  • The "Taxable Items" option in the shop settings (Shop > Options > Taxable Items) has not been established correctly. For example, if it is set to "None", tax will never be calculated on any order.
  • The user purchasing the product is not in the appropriate geographical area for any established tax classes.
